Real Transparency Starts With Us: How Southern Indiana Neighbors Can Hold Local Leaders Accountable
A lot of you have been asking the same question lately: how do we actually force our local leaders to be transparent? Not someday, not if the right people get elected, but now. Here is the honest answer. More of it is in our hands than most people realize, and none of it requires you to belong to any party. This is for neighbors across Southern Indiana who are ready to be heard.
Accountability is not a left or right issue. Whether you lean conservative, liberal, or somewhere in between, you helped pay for that budget, that contract, and that official’s salary. You have every right to see how the decisions get made. That is what EVAN is for: neighbors of every political stripe holding local government to one simple standard. Be open, be honest, and answer to the people you serve.
What actually works, starting today
None of this depends on permission from anyone. These are the tools that already exist, and they work when citizens use them.

- Ask questions in public, on the record. A question asked privately can be brushed off. A clear, fair question asked in an open meeting, in writing, becomes part of the record everyone can see.
- Track promises against the record. Write down what officials promise, then check it against what they actually vote for and fund. The gap between the two is the whole story.
- Do it together. One person asking is easy to ignore. A group of calm, prepared neighbors asking the same fair question is not. Our numbers are our leverage, and they are completely legitimate.
